The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are the documented aphorism taught by sage Patanjali around 2500 years ago. These 196 sutras cover all aspects of yoga, life, and our understanding of the self. In this talk, important sutras from the first and second chapters will be discussed etymologically, semantically, contextually, and philosophically, along with commentaries from ancient sages and modern writers. The highlights will be the legends from mythology particularly related to origin of yoga and other schools of thought.
 
While the skeleton of the talk is yoga sutra, it will not be limited by it. Other ancient text with references of yoga such as Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Vasistha, Manusmriti, Upanishads, and Yoga Pradipika will be discussed, along with the relevance of ancient yogic teaching in the hatha yoga practice.

Virag Mishra will represent Canada at the World Yoga Sports Championship 2018 this December, in Beijing, China. A lifelong student of yoga, Virag has gained most of his knowledge and understanding from his parents. His mother is a PhD in yoga, and a teacher and practitioner of alternative healing. His father is an Ayurvedic doctor with several degrees and a diploma in philosophy. Virag has offered classes in yoga asana and philosophy for some years. He is currently a PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria, and has practiced yoga asana at Found City Yoga since June.
